I find quite a bit of satisfaction in remarking that I have been following Iga Swiatek (ak.a. BergemIga) and trying to draw people’s attention to her since almost 3 years ago; even more satisfaction I find in screaming around: “as I said!!”, whilst the best rewarded blogs and websites have started to get used (a bit…) to the name of Iga not earlier than a year ago and regarded her win as a complete surprise. Which was not; it was just a matter of time.
I have spoken so many times on Iga’s tennis and on its features, that I will not repeat myself; I will instead focus on the main changes in her game since the time she was playing in the junior’s and early pro circuits.
The most evident improvement in Swiatek’s game derives from the mental strength she found in this last period; in earlier times, Iga badly lost many matches due to pressure mishandling. A main example of the issues Iga found is constituted by the Bonfiglio final that she lost against Rybakina, after having dominated two thirds of the match and after having displayed all possible repertory of double faults and “lob drop shots” in the remaining part. A further feature that change a lot in Iga’s game is technical: Iga jumps much less when hitting her shots and seems to hit much more lower on the ball. Overall, her whole game is more ordered, less risky, less make it or break it and more relying on variations: in particular on a heavy spinned forehands and on an easily hit long the line backhands. Basically, Iga’s tennis has matured and, more importantly, the black outs that ruined in part her junior career have disappeared.
Beside the great victory of Queen-of-Clay BerghemIga (by the way, she won in Paris with broadly the same ease she won Bergamo’s 15k three years ago: Iga’s scores in the two tournaments are not so different), other girls born in 2001-2002, who were mentioned many times on this blog during the last couple of years, showed up in this edition of Roland Garros. First, I am pleased to mention Clara Burel who, after having stopped her activity due to a bad injury – to her ankle, If I recall correctly – had to restart her career basically from scratch. In Paris she reached a good result, as she qualified to the third round having beaten in the process Arantxa Rus and Kaja Juvan. She has lost by Zhang in two tight sets: the score was 7-5 7-6 in favour of the Chinese.
Clara Tauson also enjoyed a good tournament, as she managed to qualify to the main draw and to reach the second round, in which she was beaten by the future semi-finalist Danielle Collins; Tauson currently ranks around 150th spot in WTA ranking, so she will now be able to play the qualifications rounds in all slams. Similarly, Leylah Fernandez played a good tournament, as she was stopped in the third round by Petra Kvitova: Fernandez once more confirmed to belong to tennis’ elite, notwithstanding the limitations given by her really small frame.
Anisimova, Gauff and Kostyuk were, instead, disappointing for different reasons. Anisimova’s loss by Halep was quite a shock in terms of score, as the young American managed to win only one game against the Rumanian champion. Gauff, instead, should not have lost her match against Trevisan, even if this French Open was a magic tournament for the Italian. Kostyuk mnaged to qualify, but I have expected her to do much better against Hibino; though, as partial justification for Marta, it must be considered that this year’s slow conditions did not fit her game at all.
On the junior tournament I have nothing to say because, after such long stop, I still have to recalibrate and get confidence with the new players. I just highlight that Brenda Fruhirtova lost in the first round of the girls’ event. Brenda is the younger sister of Linda and she is only 13; a few month ago she has beaten top 50 (WTA…) Siniakova in an exhibition. Francesco Cinà, former coach of Roberta Vinci, predicted this girl will become number 1 in the world. I guess it’s worth to follow her.

Sono un fan sfegatato di Iga e sono stato indirizzato su questo sito (che prima non conoscevo) leggendo i commenti di un’atro sito di tennis dove un’amico mi segnalava che tu parli di Iga e ne hai scoperto il talento già da molto tempo. Credo sia giusto farti i miei complimenti.
Se posso permettermi ti vorrei chiedere alcune cose:
1. Credi che a livello fisico abbia la struttura e la resistenza necessaria per giocare tante partite in serie come fanno le top-10 wta? Ha una lista non breve di infortuni e la sorella è stata costretta a smettere col tennis proprio per questo quindi sono un po preoccupato.
2. Come giudichi il suo servizio? E’ possibile migliorarlo in modo strutturale in tempi rapidi o serve un grande lavoro?
3. Come pensi possa performare su superfici veloci o medio-rapide, che di fatto costituiscono la stragrande maggioranza del circuito? Te lo chiedo perchè tanti pensano che abbia vinto a Parigi anche grazie alle condizioni atmosferiche tutte particolari di quest’annata. Io però l’ho vista giocare anche sul veloce e mi pareva che se la cavasse più che bene.

In realtà ti ho imbrogliato perchè TC e Tommy Hemp sono la stessa persona: scusa la scorrettezza, ma quando mi dicono che Vanni Gibertini ha “scoperto” la Swiatek, che da anni stava infilando risultati pazzeschi, beh… anche no!!!
Visto che non conosci il sito, te lo presento: si focalizza sul tennis junior (e per questo indubbiamente ho facilità a trovare giocatori/ici promettenti, basta capire se il braccio c’è…) e diciamo sui tennisti in transizione, proprio come lo era la Swaitek fino a poco fa. E’ completamente non professionale, in quanto gestito da gente che fa tutt’altro nella vita. I pezzi quindi variano tra 3 a settimana a 0 per vario tempo, a seconda di voglia, disponibilità etc.
Ci sono sul sito 6-7 articoli sulla Swiatek; se non li hai visti li trovi facilmente. Oltre alla Swiatek particolarmente seguite sono state Anisimova, Kostyuk, recentemente la Fernandez, per cui stravedo; Tauson, Gauff da quando aveva 13 anni, una giocatrice “vintage” con una mano straordinaria che è la Chwalinska, Kaja Juvan e la figlia della Mandlikova, i.e. Elli Mandlik, che però per ora non ha mantenuto. Tutti gli italiani/e sono seguiti dal prof. Marucci, io mi concentro più sul tennis “straniero”. Paolo Angella ha seguito molto Cocciaretto e Musetti.
Venendo alle tue domande:
1) fisicamente la swiatek è un toro. Come ho detto in qualche commento su Ubitennis, si è fatta male due volte alla stessa caviglia, una a 14 anni una attorno ai 16; l’ultima volta in un match contro la trevisan che si trova facilmente online. Sfiga vuole proprio all’ultimo punto della partita. Ciò detto, da allora non mi risultano altri infortuni e secondo me non è un caso Andreescu, che veramente fin dai tempi del junior era sempre in infermeria – posto che quando gioca vince sempre perchè è un fenomeno -. Confermo che Agata, sorella di Iga, ha smesso per un infortunio alla gamba; ma Agata ha una struttura fisica molto diversa: è altissima ed è magra come un grissino. Il padre Tomasz è stato olimpionico di canottaggio. Insomma, una famiglia sportiva.
Comunque, se a Iga regge la caviglia – e ripeto, negli ultimi 2 anni tutto ok – problemi fisici non ce ne sono.
2) Il servizio non è epocale, ma serve meglio di altre. Interessante è che fa un fracco di punti sulla seconda grazie a un kick molto pronunciato. La prima non è certo il suo punto di forza, ma neanche un colpo penalizzante e raggiunge velocità decenti tipo 180 km/h. Indubbiamente sul cemento dovrà affrontare gente che serve meglio, tipo la pliskova, ovviamente e, tra le giovani la Kostyuk, ma non è la prima ne l’ultima che giocherà contro servizi migliori.
3) da un certo punto di vista concordo sul fatto che le condizioni la abbiano aiutata, in particolare l’assenza di pubblico o il poco pubblico può aver diminuito la pressione. Ma secondo me l’eccezionalità del torneo ha solo anticipato ciò che era previsto succedesse in 2-3 anni. Iga – e su questo ho pure cambiato idea – è in effetti naturalmente terraiola, aiutandosi molto col topspin. Credo anche lei si ritenga tale. Però ha fatto ottavi slam anche sul veloce e certamente sarà competitiva anche sul veloce come lo è Nadal o Carreno. I tornei vinti per ora – tutti a livello itf – sono 5 terra e 2 veloce se non sbaglio.
4) Non sapevo chiudesse qui la stagione. Sul 2021 non faccio previsioni perchè sarà comunque un anno strano. Le previsioni che faccio sono – al netto di eventi eccezionali e imponderabili – a medio termine e la vedo come top 5 fissa, che sia 1 o 5 poco importa; vari slam; carriera di primo piano o leggendaria. Io di giovani ne ho visti, ma come lei e Tsitsipas mai. Hanno entrambi semplicemente portato a compimento ciò che già emergeva già 3 anni fa.
